A spontaneous weekend trip to southern Spain, booked on a whim. A BMW hire car, mountain roads at sunset, and a flight home that departed without its passengers. Sometimes the best travel stories begin exactly where the plan falls apart.
Getting There
Flying from Newquay kept costs low — great value return flights to Málaga, landing in the evening and heading straight for tapas in Benalmádena. The first night was low-key, exploratory, and exactly the right introduction to the trip.
Day One: City Views & Steak
The city rewarded early exploration — a hilltop castle with sweeping panoramas, followed by a proper steak dinner paired with Argentine red wine. A simple day done well.
Day Two: Ronda
A two-hour drive through mountain scenery to Ronda — one of Spain's most dramatic cliff-top towns. Tapas in a local spot, panoramic views over the gorge, a taste of the nightlife, and a late-night drive back under the stars. This is the kind of spontaneous detour that rarely makes it into travel guides but always makes it into travel memories.
Day Three: The Missed Flight
A slow morning, a wander through a pretty marina district, ice cream by the water — and then a dash to the airport. The flight, however, had other ideas. A four-hour delay, a distraction in duty-free, and a gate that closed too quickly meant the plane departed without two of its passengers.
Rather than panic, the response was practical: sort the insurance claim, find somewhere to stay, book a new flight. Two extra days in Málaga followed — a cathedral, more tapas, and a 6-hour layover in Belfast on the way home.
The Takeaway
Missed flights, extended stays, and unplanned detours are rarely disasters — they're usually the parts of a trip that stick. Travel insurance, a flexible mindset, and a willingness to see the upside can turn a setback into the highlight of the journey.
