Volunteering abroad essentials

Volunteering abroad is an amazing way to give back to the community and make a difference in the world. It can be a rewarding and inspiring experience, but it's important to make sure you have the right items with you when you go. From essential supplies to make the job easier to items to keep you safe and comfortable, here are the top ten things you should take with you when you go to volunteer.

  1. Passport: This one is a no-brainer. Make sure your passport is up to date and not about to expire. It’s also important to make copies of it and keep them in a secure place in case of an emergency.

  2. Cash: It’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand in the local currency of your destination. You’ll never know when you’ll need it for unexpected expenses.

  3. Medications: Whether it’s pain relievers, allergy medications, prescriptions or your anti-malarial's, always bring all the medications you need.

  4. Bumbag: They've recently come back into fashion and are a MUST HAVE when travelling, it's better to be safe then sorry, putting your wallet and phone in a bumbag is a lot safer then your back pocket.

  5. Snacks: Even if you’re travelling to a place with plenty of food options, it’s always a good idea to bring some snacks in case of an emergency and so you've got a taste of home with you!

  6. Travel Towel: A quick dry, light-weight travel towel can be the answer you're looking for when you're going from place to place. We recommend Dock and Bay towels, they're sand resistant too!

  7. Long, Lightweight Clothes: You never know when an adventure might come up and no one wants to be walking through the forest in shorts! Long sleeves and trousers are also good for keeping the mosquito bites down to a minimum.

  8. Portable Charger: You might be on an overnight bus to your next destination, experience a scheduled power-cut or be on a remote island. Let's be honest no one wants to run out of power these days!

  9. First aid kit: Pack a mini first aid kit with things like band-aids, antibiotic ointment, and ibuprofen.

  10. Travel documents: Make sure you have all the documents you need for your trip, such as your driver’s license and tickets (and bring some copies just in case).

These are just a few of the things you should consider taking with you when travelling. The most important thing is to be prepared and enjoy your trip!
